Chicken bloodstone is first found in Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Chicken bloodstone is called due to composition of small spots resembling blood drops. It is said that the red shades are transformed from the blood of phoenix. Thus, it is also called phoenix bloodstone, which is used for protection and exorcising evil spirits.

Chang-hua chicken bloodstone is regarded as the top four renowned stones of Chinese national treasures. It is originally produced in Yu-yan mountain of Shang-xi town in Chang-hua county of Zhe-jiang province, and its lode is located in Kang mountain ridge. Bulk mining started in Qian-long period of Qing dynasty (1736-1795). Most source is for imperial use in court, and scarcely used by civilian. Thus, chicken blood stone is precious and high-priced. Due to the closure of pit and end of mine, genuine bloodstone is very rare treasure and possesses collectable value.

This Chang-hua chicken bloodstone screen belongs to national treasure on account of its huge size, delicate carving and pure hue.

Main coloring composition of chicken bloodstone is cinnabar,a little of iron, a bit of titanium, etc. Those coloring compositions affect different shades of red due to the content. The formation of bloodstone is the permeation of cinnabar into kaolinite or land stone. The hardness of bloodstone is between two and three degrees. There are silver specks in the stone and a few quartz particles on the surface.

The statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva always has same image which shows smiling face, affability, round and big belly, and cloth sack in hand. The image often appears in homes or shops. Maitreya Bodhisattva is also known as Budai monk or Laughing Buddha in English. He is a god of wealth.

There are embossments of 18 kids around Maitreya Bodhisattva on the screen. Some kids carry gold ingot, coin, ruyi, and coral in both hands. The others carry jewels and life peach on shoulders.
